In the effort of getting the children ready to read the ditty sheets in July, we have been practicing blending and segmenting this month. In this small group reading exercise, children learned to use Fred Fingers to spell words by the sounds. When they have mastered the Fred Finger skills, they will be able to read independently. Even if they encounter challenging words, they will be able to use Fred Fingers to decode and figure out how to read the words.
In this picture, children were working together to spell the words. They pulled out the letter cards from the letter sounds they have heard, and placed the cards in the correct order. After they checked the answer with the green word card, they correct themselves from any error they have made. In the end we use Fred Fingers to sound out the words.
In this picture, children were talking about where to place the letter cards. They discussed with each other by sounding out each letter sounds they have heard, and even if their partner pulled a wrong card, they worked together by helping each other. They also discussed where each letter card should be, and while placing them in order they tried using Fred Fingers to sound out the word they have put together. Now, that is amazing!
